Palm is in a tough business: selling handhelds is a business that has long been dominated by RIM’s Blackberry device. Millions of users have come to rely on Blackberry’s to retrieve email when they’re on the road for business and pleasure.
Palm realized they needed to follow the leader, and that’s exactly what they’re doing:
Phone companies are notoriously risk-averse operations, said Carmi Levy, a senior research analyst with Info-Tech Research Group Inc. in London, Ont.
“Palm needs to show the carriers that it has a strong enough platform and that it is worth their time to work with Palm.â€
One of Palm’s disadvantages is that it doesn’t make its own software to push e-mails out to the wireless devices. Where BlackBerry customers can buy a single package that includes the device, its operating system and the server software, Treo customers must cherry-pick the different pieces of the package.
Palm is selling the Treo like hell, with no signs of stopping. Adding strategic partnerships is the one thing that get them in from of more customers, so that’s exactly what they’re doing. Look for Palm to further enhance the Treo in the coming months.
