A number of manufacturers are readying to enter the UMPC market. UMPCs were envisioned as a breakthrough product for a number of reasons. The small size and longer battery life of a UMPC would give consumers a chance to get truly mobile. There have been somewhat mixed reviews concerning the units:
“It’s a product in search of a solution. The hardware and software manufacturers have an idea, they have a form factor and components but they’re not really sure what they should do with this other than it’s ultra mobile.â€
Microsoft recognizes that the initial target audience for the UMPC will be tech-enthused gadget fans, said Elliot Katz, senior product manager of Windows client at Microsoft Canada.
“This is version one. There are two main areas where we are going to see improvements: in battery life and weight,†said Katz.
More manufactures are entering the market in order to produce units that meet these requirements. Right now, battery life lasts 2-3 hours, which is not sufficient for a truly mobile lifestyle. Building batteries with longer charge ability usually requires making them bigger, and everyone is trying to avoid doing that.
Samsung and Fujitsu are releasing models this week.
