Video games a huge boost to US economy
May 10, 2006 – 1:33 pmPeople love to complain about the damage that video games do to society, but a recent report suggest that video games contribute over $18 Billion to the US economy each year and are an employer of over 144,000 people.
The video game industry, which supported 144,000 full-time jobs and accounted for more than $8 billion in game sales in 2004, had an $18 billion impact on the U.S. economy that year, according to a new study to be released on Wednesday.
Estimates call for video game sales to grow to $15 billion by 2010. Industry employment is expected to leap nearly 75 percent to 250,000 jobs by 2009.
The numbers are truly staggering considering the relatively short life of the industry. It’s now very realistic to tell a child to think of learning video game technology in school. Intellectual property is one part of the economy that’s smoldering, with no sign of a slowdown, and video games are leading the charge.
