RIM to enter China with the BlackBerry
May 11, 2006 – 10:37 amRIM is going after a big market in China with their famous Blackberry. Research in Motion LTD has been in China for quite some time, but hasn’t aggressively attempted to build out their userbase. That is until now:
After three to four months of connecting the “few hundred thousand” corporate customers it estimates are waiting for service, RIM will turn its attention to the much bigger home-grown professional market.
The main problem for RIM will be competition. A cheaper brand called RedBerry is already available:
RedBerry service costs less than a dollar a month, plus a few cents for each email sent, according to several reports.
What’s more, China Mobile is expected to soon launch an email service called PushMail, that allows customers to use email on their existing phones.
Still, RIM knows that the name “BlackBerry” has a ton of pull with corporate users, and many people will pay the slighter higher prices to make sure they’re with a quality users. According to the article, RIM has already rounded up a few hundred thousand corporate users. This is good news, if true, and should have them rolling out a successful China launch soon.
