Sony decided to take matters into their own hands and make sure that someone is producing a notebook PC capable of playing Blu-Ray DVR Discs. Sony is in the midst of a battle with other manufacturers who are looking to establish HD DVD as the standard.
“The PC market will be increasingly polarized, with customers focusing on such basic functions as the Internet and e-mail on one end, and users that seek added value on the other,” Yoshihisa Ishida, head of Sony’s PC division, told a news conference.
The Battle of HD DVD versus Blu-Ray is of immense importance. In fact, it’s an even bigger deal than the similar VHS versus Betamax standard wars of years gone past. The battle for the billions of dollars to come on format licensing fees is a fierce one, pitting most of the major electronics makers against one another. Sony, with the Vaio, is now making sure that there is some immediate availablity of Blu-Rays in the marketplace. The units will be available in Japan in June.
