This is the big battle. The one that pits two different technologies in an attempt to achieve global dominance. The eventual winner stands to gain billions on royalty payments as trillions of the formatted discs are sold. For the importance of this battle, there has been a bit of slop in the handling of the product releases by both parties.

Sony, in particular lately has been mucking up the Blu-Ray debut. Today they plan on making the first Blu-Ray titles available. But the big problem is potential shortages at both ends of the supply chain. At least one blogger wasn’t that impressed with the Blu-Ray technology, and a bigger problem looms due to the fact that Sony is releasing only a grab-bag of raggedy movies like “50 First Dates”

Even the actual capacity of the disks is coming into question. In general, the higher definition discs will probably end up being 25GB, which should be plenty for most movies. How good the new format performs remains to be seen, and whether the masses adopt the technology are big question marks that have to be answered. If Sony does win, they’re sitting in the cat’s bird seat.

Consumer demand may be high for the Blu-Rays players. People have been unable to utilize the true capability of their High Definition televisions without a high-performance recorder. The wait is over and Blu-Ray is here.
