HDTV satellite sent into space to bolster PanAmSat network
June 21, 2006 – 7:30 amHDTV is growing and that demand will now be met easier due to a satellite launch that promises to increase HDTV signal availability. The satellite launch went extremely well:
“Another great launch,” said Rob Peckham, president and general manager of Sea Launch. “We’re obviously delighted with today’s mission.”

The unit represents an upgrade over the one it’s replacing:
Once in service, the satellite will replace the Galaxy 4R craft currently in that orbital position. The satellites are operated by PanAmSat, which flies a fleet of two dozen spacecraft capable of reaching over 98 percent of the world’s population.
PanAmSat is uniquely positioned to profit from the impending explosion of HDTV sales. Their satellite fleet is now capable of broadcasting to nearly everyone in the world and is the largest backhaul provider for all the major US broadcasting companies. PA has made a ton of profit with this fleet so far, and the earnings promise to go up.
As HDTV demands continues to grow, the satellite usage will increase dramatically. PanAmSat officials indicated the new Galaxy 16 is 98% sold out already.
