A nice option for people who need to produce Blu-Ray disks has been introduced by BenQ. Their new Blu-Ray writer will not be cheap, but it will debut in August:

The price of 799 euros, including value added tax (VAT), is aggressive for the first generation of Blu-ray disk recorders. Products from competitors will be priced at up to $1,500, excluding VAT.

One of the keys to success for the Blu-Ray standard is pricing. There are already a few burners out there using HD DVD, which is the competing format. Price and availability are two key determinants to the ultimate success of the standard.

HD DVD and Blu-Ray DVDs both offer 50GB storage space, which allows for larger files, which will make the images more clear when decompressed. Both HD DVD and Blu-Ray are competing in the burgeoning HDTV market, which is taking picture quality into a whole new realm.

Look for more competing models to be released soon.
