Undoubtedly, the war between Blu-Ray and HD-DVD will come down to marketing. The bottom line is that whichever format gets the most users will become the eventual winner and sole standard. A clear example is what happened to BetaMax and VHS. HD DVD has announced steps to avoid becoming the next Betamax.

The North American HD DVD Promotional Group, Inc has been formed. The group consists of:

  • Uniiversal Studios Home
    Entertainment
  • Warner Home Video
  • Paramount Home Entertainment
  • HP
  • Intel
  • Microsoft
  • Toshiba

They announced they’ll be spending $150 million on “The Look and Sound of Perfect(TM)”, their new advertising and marketing campaign which details the advantages of HD DVD. Expect to see a blitz, of sorts, across all major media segments as well as a “few hundred” HD DVDs being ready by year end. This should help convince manufacturers to make players, and a few have been appearing. There’s no telling who’s winning the battle so far, but this announcement today indicated the HD DVD contingent is a serious player.
