I have finished college life 14 years ago and at that time, I did not have any gadget with me. In fact, none of my classmates had anything in 1992- not even a cell phone or laptop. Well, I am in a third world country and so it was not a big deal. However, I guess that 14 years ago, even in US very few college kids had hardly any gadgets with them. At least, they did not have anything compared to this time. When I read a report in Eagle Tribune, I could not help feeling envious about the college students of today. I am quoting from the report:

College students have become the creme de la creme for electronics makers and retailers. They are expected to spend more than $10.5 billion gearing-up for campus this year, according to the National Retail Federation.

Back to school isn’t what it used to be 20 years ago when a Sony Walkman cassette player and a leather day planner were considered high-end accessories.

Today, top-notch technology - such as the wireless Compaq Tablet PC that Chatham College is distributing to incoming freshmen for the second year - is required in some classrooms.

I wonder how these students can focus on their studies amidst so many gadgets. Of course, having gadgets can make your life easier and actually help you in your studies. Just imagine life without Internet. However, getting addicted to gadgets is not a good thing for students. I also wonder how professors feel about this matter.

Whether professors like the gadgets or not, the students will continue to buy them and the gadget companies will get richer.
