Nokia and Microsoft think that Apple can be beat in the MP3 game, despite the company’s massively successful Ipod. Many Ipod customers are very loyal, and might not be likely to switch. But Nokia and Microsoft think that first time buyers would be likely to go with them. Microsoft is entering the fray with their “Zune” player:

The Zune, made by Japanese electronics group Toshiba Corp., will have a 30-gigabyte hard-disk drive, wireless connectivity and a three-inch (eight-centimeter) liquid crystal display screen.

Nokia, of course, will go the route of adding MP3 functionality to existing phones, which could be an alternative for a lot of people:

And Kurt Boz, a salesman at a store of mobile operator E-Plus in Frankfurt, said handsets with integrated MP3 players as well as cameras — such as Sony Ericsson’s K800 — were flying off the shelves.

Expect to see tons of models of integrated phones/MP3 players coming in the next few months.
