The books are available in PDF format, according to AP, but will be converted into EPUB format, which can be read by the Sony Reader.

“Really our vision is: any book, anywhere, any time and on any device,” said Google Spokesperson Jennie Johnson. “We want to partner with anybody who shares our vision of making them more accessible.”

The Sony Reader comes in two models, one that sells for $300 and another that is offered at $350.

The Amazon Kindle uses its own format for files.

The Twitter bird, the one that “Tweets” on the Twitter home page and has been seen by millions was not an expensive piece of art to construct. In fact, the birdie only cost $6. That’s the kind of deal most companies would kill for.

The bird was designed by Brit Simon Oxley. He sold it to Twitter through iStockPhoto.

“I am not sure [whether crowdsourcing hurts designers],” he told Wired via e-mail. “I believe a designer can only be ‘hurt’ when they stand in line — instead of constantly seeking new inspiration and producing new things with their ever-increasing experiences.”

At the least Oxley gets the privilege of knowing that his artwork is enjoyed by millions. That has to count for something.

Google announced a new plan to offer ads to users based on general areas of interest. Google will use data that they accumulate that indicates general broad areas a surfer might be interested in.

To develop interest categories, we’ll recognize the types of webpages users visit across the AdSense network. As an example, if they visit a number of sports pages, we’ll add them to the “sports enthusiast” interest category. You can visit the Help Center to learn more about how interest categories will be developed and your associated account settings. As a result of this launch, your privacy policy will now need to reflect the use of interest-based advertising. Please ensure that your site’s privacy policies are up-to-date and make any necessary changes by April 8, 2009.

Beginning on April 8, Google will begin acquiring and collating the necessary information for the “interested-based” ads.

The question is getting to be: just how influential is the internet when it comes to politics? It seems as if candidates will be ignoring the ‘Net at their own peril, especially when you see numbers like the one million viewers who watched a mashup of Democratic hopefuls debating.

Comedian Bill Maher, who asked one of four questions posed to each of the eight candidates, attracted viewers 42 percent of the time. He quizzed the hopefuls about the Ten Commandments, marijuana legalization, the relative dangers of sugar, coal dust and terrorism, and the climate-changing impact of cows.

Yahoo, HuffingtonPost.com and Slate.com conceived the format as a way to give online viewers the ability to build a debate with video blocks of each candidate answering different questions on education, health care and the war from PBS host Charlie Rose. A “wild-card” question came from Maher.

So the concept seems to be working. I’m sure this won’t be the last debate of this sort we see.

Talk about exciting news - Today is the 25th anniversary of the emoticon. Life would never have been same without this dubious invention.

Although some dispute that it was his innovation alone, Fahlman is thought to have used the first emoticon at 11.44am on an electronic bulletin board on this date in 1982. “I propose the following character sequence for joke markers: ,” he typed. “Read it sideways.” A quarter of a century on, Yahoo is now sponsoring the Smiley Award, a student competition for “innovation in technology-assisted, person-to-person communication”. The emoticon, they feel, is something to be celebrated.

Personally, I love emoticons and expect them to outlive most people. Happy Birthday Emo!
