Google Says Company Can Avoid Economic Downturn

March 18, 2008 – 7:56 am

Executives at Google seem to think the company is immune to an economic slowdown. Eric Schmidt said during a press conference that Google is uniquely positioned to avoid the troubles plaguing many other firms.

“It’s too early to say if there’s (already) been any specific impact but if there were I don’t think it would be much,” Schmidt said.

“We believe that if there were (a U.S. recession), we’ll be well positioned. We’re not particularly dependent on any particular one market. There’s not a lot of advertising for any one market over another,” he said.

“There tends to be a flight in a global slowdown to higher quality advertising and higher quality advertising is determined by what sells,” he said.

The question is: will those companies continue to buy ads from Google?

March 17, 2008 – 11:01 am

Robert Soloway was a heavy duty email spammer and now he faces up to 26 years in prison for his efforts. It’s tough to feel sorry for the guy, who once bragged: “I’ve been sued for hundreds of millions of dollars and have had my business running for over 10 years without ever paying a dime, regardless to the outcome of any lawsuits.”.

Sentencing is June 20th.

Soloway has already pleaded guilty to charges of fraud and tax evasion.

My Inbox laughs ruefully.

Catching Google Is Microsoft’s Goal

March 10, 2008 – 9:12 am

According to Steve Ballmer, catching up with Google is the main goal of Microsoft.

At the MIX08 conference, Steve Ballmer said that Google is the obvious reason MSFT made an unsolicited $42 billion offer for Yahoo.

“In online, yeah, it’s Google, Google, Google, and we’re in the game. We’re just the little engine that could,” said Ballmer.

So far the offer to Yahoo has elicited little enthusiasm from Yahoo, who would prefer to continue on as an independent company.

Website Unblockers

March 6, 2008 – 6:25 pm

Website unblockers are extremely useful when you find that a website you used to be able to access can no longer be reached from your network. Sometimes gung-ho sysadmins tend to turn off access to any websites they deem unfit. Sure, this is a form of censorship, but if they feel it’s the best thing for their network, they’ll do it with no qualms.

The way around these blocks is by using proxy servers. Proxy servers are the oldest form of websites unblockers around. A proxy allows you to regain lost access to your favorite sites.

Here are a lits of several good website unblockers:

All of these were in working order last time I checked.
