Quit Using Internet Explorer
December 18, 2008 – 9:52 amFor the first time ever, a full blown effort to get users to quit using Internet Explorer is underway. For years the web browser has had more than its’ fair share of flaws, but now those weaknesses are becoming so huge that merely using the browser is a danger for many.
Most experts are urging people to dump IE.
Virtually all security experts (as well as myself) are counseling users to switch to any other web browser — none of the others are affected, including Firefox, Chrome, and Opera — at least for the time being, though Microsoft has stubbornly said it “cannot recommend people switch due to this one flaw.” Microsoft adds that it is working on a fix but has offered no ETA on when that might happen. Meanwhile it offers some suggestions for a temporary patch, including setting your Internet security zone settings to “high” and offering some complicated workarounds. (Some reports state, however, that the fixes do not actually work.)
Patch or switch. It’s up to you. But what a great time for IE to have these problems if you’re Google and you just released your Chrome Browser. Chrome uses a very efficient caching system and is already much faster than IE.
This could be the beginning of the end for Internet Explorer as a dominant browser, now that many competitors have much more robust products.
