The Best Beginner Quadcopter August 22, 2016

If you are thinking about getting into the RC hobby, then you’ve most probably seen the quadcopter craze that’s swept the world. These small unmanned aerial vehicles are quite enjoyable to fly, you can hover, you can go back, you can go right up or down. All things that you simply can not really do in an RC plane. But it is also a bit more difficult to learn to fly (I think). The reason behind this is because of orientation. With a plane it is considerably more clear which way is forward, and you’re consistently going forward, to keep lift.

However with a quadcopter,, it is much more difficult to maintain orientation because you’ve got a symmetric framework. You’ve 4 motors in an X configuration, if it is a quadcopter and you’ll be able to choose which way is forwards by you mount the flight control board. But after you get up in the air maintain that orientation through all the maneuvers, and you need to remember which way is forwards. I’ve found that a great way to help keep orientation is by making the propellers in the front a different color from the propellers in the rear. On mine, by way of example, the front two are blue, and the back two are red. In this manner, when flying, I’m able to tell which way is forwards.

So because it is so hard to learn the best way to fly a quadcopter, I ‘ll always recommend that a beginner buy a quadcopter plaything that is small, before dropping $450 on a DJI Phantom for example. My favorite is the Syma X1 Quadcopter although there are a couple good little quadcopter playthings out there. It comes in a few different shapes, you can get a space ship type, micro size like a bumblebee, or a UFO type.  It has everything you need to fly for just about $40. That comprises a 2.4 GHz transmitter so you can fly indoors and outside with a fairly good range. It also means that you could fly more than a couple of these men around. It can additionally do flips in any direction at the touch of a button!

One significant thing to note is the way to calibrate it. A lot of people believe that their quadcopter is broken because after they plug in the battery and try to fly it, it will constantly veer off in one way. So what the flight controller thinks is degree, actually isn’t level. So what you have to do, is plug in the battery, then immediately place it on a flat surface so it can calibrate accurately. Then you are ready to go!
